For Immediate Release, TORONTO. On Thursday, October
19th The Recycling Council of Ontario held the 2006 Ontario Waste
Minimization Awards, and honoured Direct Energy Centre with a Silver
Award for Sustainable Technology and a Bronze Award for Facility Management.
Exhibition Place took home the Gold Award in the Category of Facility
Management. The Waste Minimization Awards recognize provincial waste
diversion champions in business, municipalities, institutions, education,
not-for-profit, the media, as well as individuals.
This Recycling Council of Ontario's 23-year tradition honours those
who demonstrate excellence and leadership in the creation of waste
reduction/diversion initiatives. The Awards are integrated into the
celebration of Waste Reduction Week in Canada (WRW), October 16th
- 22nd, when communities across the country are encouraged to promote
the 3Rs principles and help others understand and adopt the benefits
of waste free living.
Direct Energy Centre, located on the grounds of Exhibition Place in
Toronto is strongly committed to the protection of the environment.
One of the most exciting initiatives for 2006 was a major lighting
upgrade. This initiative replaced existing 1000 watt fixtures and
lamps in the main exhibit halls and public Galleria areas with energy
efficient, 400 watt, high light output products to yield an annual
energy consumption reduction of 2.3 million kWh.
About our Environmental Initiatives Exhibition Place and Direct Energy
Centre are committed to be a world leader in energy-efficient technologies.
Some of our environmental initiatives include: a goal of energy self-sufficiency
by 2010; waste-diversion recycling programs rendering the venue 70%
waste-free by 2008; a wind turbine producing 1 million kilowatt hours
of energy annually; hydrogen fuel-cells to power utility vehicles;
an urban forestry program including lake-water irrigation of the site;
venue naming rights with fees earmarked for energy conservation projects,
and later in 2006 a tri-generation program using a natural gas-fired
generator to satisfy 30% of the venues energy needs.
